A special page in the history of the cult buildings of the Leningrad Region is wooden architecture and, as its component, wooden churches of the 16th-18th centuries.
Most of the wooden buildings are concentrated in the northeast of the region - in Podporozhsky district. Monuments of wooden architecture still stand in their original places, which is the most important factor of the authenticity of the monument.
Among the architectural pearls of wooden architecture, the oldest surviving wooden church in the Leningrad Region is the Church of St. George in Yuksovichi, built in 1493. Also a lot of buildings XVII-XVIII centuries are preserved in the region.
